When is the best time to post to social media for the most engagement?

When is the best time to post to social media?

It's the question of the ages. We've seen hundreds of different answers to this question, ranging from specific times of the day and days of the week, but truth be told, these are all largely guesses.

Why? Because the best time to post to social media is different for every audience.

The best time to post to social media largely depends on your brand's historical performance and audience as a whole. Each audience is online at different times as people are dispersed throughout the world.

For example, if your audience is mostly New York-based, they'll be online at different times than if they're based in Sydney, Australia.

However, this doesn't mean you should post at random times and hope for the best. Instead, there are a few key metrics you can look at to help you decide when to schedule your social posts for the most likes, comments, and shares.

In this article, we'll walk you through these metrics. We'll give you a look at our in-house Optimization reporting features that will automatically schedule your posts for the most engagement.

Let's get started.

Where is your audience located?

First thing's first: find where your audience is located.

This is one of the biggest factors in deciding when to post content to social media for maximum engagement. Knowing where the majority of your audience is located means that you can take a good guess at when they're awake and will see your content.

You can do this manually by searching through your list of followers and clicking on a handful of profiles. Note their location, and factor this into scheduling your posts. For example, if you see that 50 of your 600 followers are based in Los Angeles, you may want to post during 8am to 6pm LA time.

The Geography report in Social Report makes it easier to post when your customers are active

Social Report makes it easy to find where your audience is located. Instead of manually searching, use our cross-channel geography report to finds where your audience is located across all social networks and visualizes it for you.

To access this report, sign up for a Social Report account and link your social media accounts to a project. Then click the Reports button, hover over cross-channel, and click Geography.

Alternatively, you can use our single-channel reporting features to determine where your audience is located across all social networks. Just go to Reports and select the social network you want to examine. Then, click Geography on the right-hand side of the screen.

Look at historical engagement

Another important factor in scheduling your posts is looking at when your posts have been engaged with in the past. This gives you a good indication of when your posts have been like, shared, and commented on in the past, so you can replicate good results.

Social Report makes this easier than ever with our Optimization reports. In our cross-channel reporting feature, click Optimization tab. Here, you can view three months of historic data compiled into one one, easy-to-read chart.

At the top of the Optimization screen, you'll see what days of the week your posts have been post engaged with. Click on any of the days of the week to see which hours of the day your posts have been most engaged on that day of the week.

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and you'll see what hours of the day your posts have been most engaged with.

Use this historical data to find the best times of the week and times of day to post your content. Social Report uses your last 3 months of social media engagement data to find these days and hours to post.

Even cooler, you can use Social Report to automatically schedule your social media posts at optimal times.
