Instagram has a huge week; introduces new video platform

This week in social news is all about Instagram. The Facebook-owned photo-sharing network announced a new monthly active user milestone and— not so surprisingly—a YouTube competitor.

Crazy week, right!?

Well, it's Friday and you know what that means: it's time to review this week in social news. In this article, we'll give you an in-depth look at the announcements made at Instagram's IGTV event in San Francisco.

Let's jump right in!

Instagram hits 1 billion (!!!) monthly active users

Before spilling the beans on its new video service, Instagram announced that it has finally reached 1 billion active users after being online for just 8 years.

To put it that number perspective, Twitter had just 336 million active users as of Q1 2018. In fact, the only social networks that beat Twitter in monthly active users are Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Messenger.

Not surprisingly, four of the five top social networks are owned by Facebook.

What should marketers make of this?

With such massive growth, it's becoming more important than ever for brands to get on the social network to drive sales and generate new leads. Take a look at your brand's Instagram and make sure that you're putting out the best content possible.

Now for the big announcement: Instagram TV

The event was called IGTV for a reason: Instagram introduced Instagram TV

This new video sharing platform is Instagram's attempt to take on YouTube. Instagram users can upload videos up to one hour long to Instagram TV. Even cooler, these videos now play in full-screen (but still vertically), something Instagram did to match "how you actually use your phone."

The service launches this week within the standard Instagram app and as a standalone app. When using the standalone app, videos start playing as soon as you open the app, mimicking a real TV.

The Instagram TV app is already in the App Store and Google Play, so you can start posting content to the platform today.

What should marketers make of this?

Instagram marketers should download the Instagram TV app right away.

There's a ton of opportunity with this new social network, and you don't want your brand to be left in the dust. We expect to see brands start their own Instagram TV series and privately buy ads on popular Instagram TV series in the coming weeks.

What do you think?

And there you have it: this week in Instagram news. Instagram's announcement of Instagram TV may be one of the biggest of 2018, so keep it on your radar and think about how your brand can implement it into its marketing strategy.
