Social media marketing is crucial to the the success of any freelancer. It’s crucial to maintain a professional presence that both showcases your work and your interests. This shows your clients what you’re capable of and what you want to work on.

While there's no specific social media blueprint that freelancers need to follow, there are a few considerations that you should follow when developing your social media presence. In this article, we'll give you five tips to keep in mind when creating a social media presence to market yourself as a freelancer.

Share Your Work, But Not in Excess

Don't use social media as a portfolio. Share your best work on a regular basis and new work as it's published. However, oversharing links to your work leaves no reason for follower's to view your full portfolio.

With this in mind, try and limit sharing your work to two or three posts a week. This ensures that your potential clients see your work, and are hungry to see more.

Start a Blog


Start your own mini content marketing campaign; create a blog and make your own thought leadership posts on the industry in which you freelance. Then, share these posts with your social following. Doing this shows your following that you're knowledgeable about your industry and can drive you business by way of search engine discovery.

Alternatively, you can use LinkedIn's Publishing feature to write and publish blog posts. This platform publishes posts right to your LinkedIn profile, and requires no additional setup.

Share thought leadership articles, news pieces, and other content that relates to your professional interests. Are you a freelance web designer? Share articles that relate to new web design trends and development practices. This shows that you're up-to-date with trends in your industry and that you're truly passionate about your craft.

Keep Your Profiles Up to Date and Consistent

Nothing looks more unprofessional than an outdated social profile—especially on LinkedIn. Make sure to advertise current clients, have an updated profile picture, and note whether or not you're open for new clients. Out of date profiles look inactive, and may make perspective clients hesitant to contact you. 

Separate Your Personal Profiles

We've found that it's best to separate your personal and professional life on social media. As much as your clients like you, they probably don't care to see pictures from your Christmas party. Likewise, your high school buddies probably don't want to see daily thought leadership articles on your industry. Separating these keeps your clients engaged and will help you maintain a professional image.
