The dimensions Facebook will use for images will depend on the orientation of the image your upload. Facebook will automatically optimize portrait (vertical), landscape (horizontal), or square photos.
Portrait images will be scaled to 476 pixels wide and up to a maximum height of 714 pixels. If your photo is beyond the maximum height limit, Facebook will crop the bottom section.
For horizontal images, Facebook will be scaled to a width of 476 pixels and adjust the height proportionally.
On the other hand, a square image will be automatically adjusted to a dimension of 476 pixels regardless of the original size. This means square images with less than 476 pixels will be sized up and images larger than the prescribed dimensions will be scaled down proportionally.
Link Preview Image
Facebook will automatically include the featured image from a link you share using Open Graph tags from the page. You will be able to add this tag manually to your website or try an SEO plugin like Yoast.
For image previews, Facebook will scale it to fit a box that's 476 pixels wide and 249 pixels wide. Images larger than these dimensions will have their top and bottom areas cropped.
On the other hand, Facebook may not add a preview image for links that don't have proper tags. Also, images that are too small will be shown as a thumbnail instead of a full 476x249 banner. Thumbnails are generally square with a 158-pixel height and width.

Facebook makes it easy to share photos, and any photos uploaded on their site will be automatically resized and formatted. To ensure your photos are automatically formatted in the highest possible quality, Facebook recommends resizing photos to 720, 960, or 2048 pixels wide.

Single Image Posts
A single image posted on a Tweet will be shown at a maximum height and width of 506 pixels when viewed on a desktop browser. Twitter recommends using a 2:1 or 1:1 aspect ratio for images. Images smaller than 506x253 will published with white space on the right side of the post.
On a mobile device, images will be published with a 16:9 aspect ratio with an ideal dimension of 1,200x 675.

Even with support for landscape and portrait, uploading images on Instagram is pretty straightforward compared to Facebook and Twitter. For the traditional square photo, use an image that's 1080x1080.
On the other hand, the ideal size for a portrait image is 1080x1350.

Instagram stories are generally viewed in the portrait or vertical orientation. When you share a photo as a story, the ideal aspect ratio is 9:16, sort of a widescreen aspect ratio flipped vertically. To make sure photos aren't cropped in important parts, use a photo that’s 1080x1920.

When sharing photos on your personal page on Linkedin, the magic numbers seem to be 522x368. When you upload a larger photo on the site, Linkedin will crop the photo to meet the required dimensions, but people will still be able to see the full image once they click on it.
Landscape photos will be shown with a maximum height of 378 pixels, while portrait photos max out at 522 pixels wide. The parts of the photo that exceed the maximum height or width will be cropped.
This magic number also applies to the featured photos on articles you share on the social network. This applies to the image people see on their feed. For the cover photo of the article itself, Linkedin recommends using images that are 744x400.
Linkedin gives company pages a little more wiggle room compared to personal profiles in terms of image sizes. For company pages, it is recommended to use an image that's 1200x627 or images with an aspect ratio of 1.91:1. An image from a pinned post will expand to a width of 564 pixels and show the cropped parts when a user clicks on it.
Although they will be scaled up or down depending on where you see them, it is ideal to use an image with an aspect ratio of 2:3 when posting on Pinterest. The size is a less of an issue, but Pinterest recommends photos to have a width of at least 600 pixels.
